How do week numbers work?

Depending on which part of the world you are from week numbers can differ a bit and it may be a little confusing.

When is week number 1? [In accordance with ISO or the International Organization for Standardization]

If the 1st of January falls on Monday – Thursday, then the week of 1 January is the first week.

If the 1st of January falls on a Friday – Sunday, then the 1st of January is regarded to be part of the last week of the last year, and the first week will begin on the 1st Monday after the 1st of January.
